It was not that long ago that Holmen existed solely as a lovely, peaceful stretch of farmland, river basin and prairieland. There are, of course, several reasons for its rapid growth, but perhaps the biggest reason is that it contains a superb blend of rural and metropolitan attributes.

Holmen residents have an enviable freedom of choice between three distinct points on the population spectrum. The sprawling urban metroplexes of Chicago, Milwaukee and Minneapolis-St. Paul are an easy drive away for most people (162 miles to Minneapolis, 213 to Milwaukee and 284 to Chicago) so a big-city experience is easy to plan. Closer to home, the greater La Crosse metropolitan area offers the advantages of an attractive mid-size city. And, of course, the Holmen area itself offers a serene, beautiful, rural home environment.

    Schools, Health, Transportation

The Holmen School District serves the community of Holmen and includes four elementary, two middle schools including Ventures Charter school, and Holmen High School.

Gundersen Lutheran health care center is the largest medical facility in the area, located about ten miles away in La Crosse. Some of the other health care options nearby include the Franciscan Skemp Sparta Hospital and the Franciscan Skemp La Crosse Hospital.

Holmen is about 10 miles north of Interstate 90, which is convenient for commuters. It’s also close to a number of state highways and county roads. And, there is an Amtrak train station about 9 miles south of town.
